Abstract

1459251 Extraction of ferric compounds SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 29 Jan 1974 [31 Jan 1973] 04031/74 Heading C1A Ferric compounds are extracted from aqueous solutions comprising one or more ferric compounds by contacting, above 50‹ C., the aqueous solution with an extractant comprising an alkane monocarboxylic acid, having from 5-21 (inclusive) carbon atoms/molecule, in a waterimmiscible organic solvent and thereafter separating the resulting extract phase containing the extracted ferric compounds from the extracted aqueous solution. Process conditions are preferably an extracting temperature of 60-100‹ C. and an aqueous solution pH of 2À6-2À9. Extracted ferric compounds can be recovered from the loaded organic extract phase by treatment with a mineral acid, e.g. HCl, HNO 3 or H 2 SO 4 , and then evaporating or crystallizing the ferric-compound-containing aqueous phase to recover the corresponding salt; the stripped organic phase is re-usable as extractant if desired.
