Abstract
1486053 Hydrogen and oxygen from water RHEINISCHE BRAUNKOHLENWERKE AG 20 May 1975 [20 May 1974] 21680/75 Heading C1A Hydrogen and oxygen are obtained from water in a thermochemical multi-step cyclic process involving at least four process steps in which water and one or more auxiliary reactants selected from iron oxides, iron chlorides, Cl 2 , HCl, H 2 and O 2 are reacted at elevated temperatures, wherein (a) in one process step an iron chloride is formed by the reaction of an iron oxide with Cl 2 thereby setting free O 2 , or with HCl, (b) another iron chloride is formed by the reaction of the same or another iron oxide with Cl 2 and/or HCl in another process step (c) the iron oxide or oxides used in process steps (a) and (b) are re-formed from the iron chloride by reacting the latter with one or more auxiliary reactants or water in at least two further process steps and thereby (i) setting free H 2 and (ii) setting free O 2 when an iron chloride is formed by reacting an iron oxide with HCl in step (a) or step (b), and (d) separately recovering the H 2 and O 2 formed. Preferably, steps (a) and (b) are conducted at 450‹ to 1050‹ C., with ferrous chloride being formed in step (a) and ferric chloride in step (b).
