Abstract

1486007 Automatic control of electrolysis PRODUITS CHIMIQUES UGINE KUHLMANN 29 Aug 1974 [17 Sept 1973] 37848/74 Heading G3R [Also in Division C7]. A mercury cathode cell for alkali or alkaline earth metal chloride electrolysis and having separately supported groups of anodes is protected against short circuits by measuring the current i for each group of anodes and the mean current i over all the groups and determining the value (i-i) for each group which is compared with a predetermined desired high threshold value #. If (i-i)-#>0, a signal is given which may be used either automatically to control via a computer raising of the appropriate anode support or to give warning to a manual operator that this is necessary. The electrolysis may further be controlled by also comparing (i-i) with a predetermined low threshold value # and if (i-i)-# < 0 and provided that the electrolysis voltage of the anode group in question exceeds a predetermined desired value, the anode support is lowered. In addition, when the mean electrolysis voltage or the voltage of a support becomes less than a predetermined safety value, the anode support(s) may be raised until the voltage is again above the safety value. All measurements may be taken continuously or at successive brief time intervals and be automatically electronically processed with a computer. Raising orders to the supports may take precedence over lowering orders while the lowering orders may be subject to specified time limitations with regard to preceding lowering or raising orders. The currents may be measured in terms of voltage drops at appropriate locations.
