Abstract

1485956 Adjusting vehicle headlamps LUCAS ELECTRICAL Ltd 28 Jan 1975 [6 Feb 1974] 05458/74 Heading F4R In a means for tilting vehicle hadlamp 12 about horizontal axis 37 in response to changes in attitude of the vehicle, fluid 22 is heated in container 20 by electrical heating element 19, the current supplied to leads 15 being related to the attitude of the vehicle, expansion or contraction of fluid 22 bringing about tilting by means of output member 24 and mechanical/ hydraulic linkage 11, the spacing 35 between output member 24 and cupped member 34 of linkage 11 being such that these do not engage until the temperature of fluid 22 is above a given minimum, say 85‹ F., which is above the maximum ambient temperature likely to be encountered. The heating current may be controlled by a variable resistor the value ot which depends on the effective length of a cable which changes according to the attitude of the vehicle (Fig. 1, not shown). As shown, linkage 11 includes a cylinder 27 containing hydraulic fluid and link rod 30, both being slidable relative to outer sleeve 25, spring 31 biasing cylinder 27 against stop 33. Cylinder 27 is hydraulically connected with cylinder 38 of member 13, whereby rod 42 is biased into engagement with engine 44 so as to bring about tilting in response to severe acceleration or braking.
