Abstract

1485618 Improving adhesion of coatings to rubber DUNLOP Ltd 27 Aug 1974 [29 Aug 1973 22 Sept 1973] 44540/73 and 35136/74 Divided out of 1479460 Addition to 1387583 Heading B2E [Also in Division B5] A composite structure comprises (i) an unsaturated rubber which is a hydrocarbon polymer, polychloroprene or a chloroprene-hydrocarbon copolymer directly bonded, without an adhesive interlayer to (ii) a polyester, which is the reaction product of an aliphatic diol and a compound having two acidic groups attached to an aromatic nucleus, one group being a -CO- containing group, e.g. -COOH, -COO (alkyl), -COCl, and the other being such a group or an -OH group, or an elastoplastic linear block copolymer containing such a polyester block. The structure is made by treating the surface of the rubber with concentrated nitric acid or HOCl or a generator thereof (e.g. acidified alkali metal hypochlorite, trichloroisocyanuric acid or alkali metal mono- or dichloroisocyanurate), preferably at room temperature, heating the polyester with or without pressure to melt at least the bonding surface, and solidifying the molten polyester in contact with the rubber. The rubber may be vulcanised or unvulcanised, in the latter case the heat of vulcanisation melts the polyester. The polyester may be applied by injection-, transfer-, rotation- or compression-moulding, extrusion, powder spraying or fluidised bed coating, and may be a polyalkylene terephthalate, isophthalate, terephthalate-isophthalate or p-hydroxybenzoate, the alkylene group containing 2-8 C atoms, or a block copolymer of n amorphous blocks of polyether, aliphatic acid polyester, olefin polymer, or interlinked sub-blocks ofthese, with (n+1) crystalline polyester blocks, such copolymers being described in detail. The rubber should contain over 5 C=C bonds/100 main chain C atoms. Specified hydrocarbon polymer rubbers are poly-1, 5-pentenamer, natural rubber, synthetic cis-polyisoprene, polybutadiene, butadiene-styrene and butadiene-α-methylstyrene.
