Abstract
1484420 Steel making furnaces ASSOCIATED ELECTRIC INDUSTRIES Ltd 9 June 1976 [16 June 1975] 25576/75 Heading F4B In a steel making furnace the exhaust gases, created during the injection of oxygen into the molten metal, are led by an off-take 5 and ducts 8, 10 to a heat storage chamber 14 where gases give up some of their heat to refractory material arranged in a multiplicity of passages before passing via ducts 15, 13 to a fume cleaner 12. When oxygen injection ceases, a change-over valve 7 connects the furnace off take via a duct 11 direct with the fume cleaner 12 and changeover valves 24 and 16 are operated so that a fan 23 can circulate air or other gas through the heat storage chamber 14 and round a chamber 20 to heat up baskets 21 filled with charge material for the furnace. The furnace may be an electric arc type with electrodes 4 and a sliding joint 6 so that metal can be poured from a spout 2. During oxygen injection the exhaust gases may first pass to a combustion chamber 9 in which carbon monoxide is burned with air to form carbon dioxide before the gases pass into the heat storage chamber 14.
