Subaqueous audible signals; subaqueous transmission of speech.-In apparatus for receiving or transmitting subaqueous sound, the shallow chamber 4 interposed between the diaphragm 1 in contact with the water and the sound detector or producer proper, as described in the parent Specification, communicates through an opening b with a second chamber l<2>. In some cases the opening b may be closed by a diaphragm. The chamber l<2> may communicate through a tube with the ear, or sound produced for example by the voice may be led to the chamber l<2> through a tube, and is thence transmitted to the water through chamber 4 and diaphragm 1. The chamber l<2> may be formed to act as a resonator. In another form, the chamber l<2> is closed and contains the sound detector or producer. Fig. 3 shows a microphone m mounted within the chamber l<2> on a diaphragm r. By tuning the chamber l<2> and diaphragm 1 to the same tone, and varying the coupling effect by altering the volume of the coupling chamber 4, the apparatus may be made responsive to two frequencies lying more or less closely together. A series of additional chambers such as l<2> may be used.
