Abstract

1483685 Photochromic cellulose ester articles AMERICAN OPTICAL CORP 28 Oct 1975 [21 March 1975] 44449/75 Heading C3F [Also in Division C4] A photochromic article comprises a thermoplastic polymer containing a Hg dithizonate and from 10 to 60% by weight of a substituted benzophenone which plasticizes the polymer to produce a faster response to radiation and which filters out U.V. radiation. Dyes and other plasticizers, e.g. dibutyl adipate, dimethyl sebacate and phthalate esters may be added. Benzophenones include 2,2<SP>1</SP>-dihydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone, dithizonates include Hg bis di- α,α,α - trifluoro - ortho - tolyl - thiocarbazonate and may contain other aryl and alkyl groups, Cl, Br and I. The polymer is preferably cellulose acetate butyrate. The composition is prepared by dissolving the dithizonate and polymer in methylene chloride and casting a film on glass or polyethylene coated paper.
