Abstract

1483660 Valves; spring power storing mechanisms B U KENEALY 30 Dec 1974 [12 Feb 1974] 55974/74 Headings F2V and F2S A valve operating mechanism has a threaded valve operating rod 1b movable longitudinally against biasing means (such as spring 19) by rotation of a control unit 2, 2a engaging the threaded portion of the rod, the control unit being in frictional engagement with a ratchet 7b from which a pawl 14 is releasable by means 15, 16, 11, 13, 17. The control unit is shown in the form of a sleeve and nut and may have a gear wheel 2b driven by pinions 3, 4 from a handwheel 5. As shown the pinion is disengageable from the gear wheel in advance of the release of the pawl through the same mechanism. The mechanism is adaptable to quick closing or opening valves. Rotation of the gear in one direction drives the ratchet by friction and comprises a spring 19 at the same time as the valve rod is moved. On release of the pawl spring energy moves the valve rod through the rotation of the control unit portion 2a which with the rod has suitable helix angle.
