Abstract

1483557 Stethoscopic devices STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 18 Sept 1975 38359/75 Heading H4J A stethoscope comprises a cup-shaped housing 1 having an aperture 4, and otherwise closed by a magnetic diaphragm 3. A flexible tube 6 acoustically connects to the interior of the chamber through the aperture 4 and has a listening device (not shown) at the other end, the stethoscope is for use with public address pillars in zoos, &c., where recorded information is made available to the public. The pillar may have a marking indicating where a stethoscope is to be placed and under the marking is a coil with pole pieces, the coil being electrically connected to a tape recorder or other source of speech signals. The coil and polepieces produce a varying magnetic field to which the diaphragm 3 is coupled. The housing, tube and listening device (a simple earpiece) are of plastics materials. The edge of the peripheral wall of the housing or the surface of the pillar may be grooved or have other surface irregularities to ensure, that the major acoustic loading on the diaphragm is in the chamber of the housing 1 connecting with the tube 6.
