Abstract

1483183 Wells &c H KOPLIN 13 Feb 1975 6171/75 Heading E1F A device for use in the completion of an oil or gas well to provide a passage between the oil or gas-bearing stratum and the interior of the well casing comprises a hollow member 5 mounted in the casing wall, a water-soluble plug 8b blocking the bore of the hollow member, and means at each end of the plug for preventing premature contact of the plug by water. The plug comprises a mixture of salt and an epoxy resin. The inner end of the plug is initially protected from water by a closed end of the hollow member 5 and the outer end is protected by a layer of grease. During installation of the casing the device is held in a retracted position by means of a plastics sleeve 11. After installation the device is extended outwardly to contact the stratum and the inner end of the member 5, which still protrudes into the casing, is sheared by means of a bit lowered into the casing. A retaining ring 10 limits outward movement of the device and check balls 7 cooperating with a slanted surface 6a prevent subsequent retraction.
