A stable, homogeneous insulating liquid over the range - 10‹ to 85‹ C. at atmospheric pressure fills the cable and consists of, or includes as fire retardant at least one aliphatic halocarbon containing 2-4 carbon atoms per molecule, e.g. perchloroethylene, pentachloroethane, hexachlorobutadiene. If a solvent is present this may be an alkylbenzene oil for example. A known insulating liquid may be inserted in the cable during assembly, the toxic fire retardant being added to or substituted for that liquid later, e.g. after laying. A stop or straight joint, a sealing end or an oil pressure tank when used with the cable may also be filled with the insulating liquid.
