Abstract

1482610 Expandable mandrels LHOMME SA 22 Aug 1974 36994/74 Heading F2U [Also in Division D1] An expandable mandrel for securing a tube A for winding and unwinding strip or thread comprises an elastic ring 8 having a cylindrical gripping surface and an inner conical surface which bears on a paired bearing surface of a rotatable drive plate 3, an electromagnet determining, as required, a relative axial slip of the ring on the plate. As shown the drive plate 3 forms the electromagnet having its winding 3d supplied with current through carbon contacts 6 on a fixed support arm 2, the plate being driven by a chain or a V-belt 7. The elastic ring may be a single piece split ring or a segmented ring housing coiled tension springs or a spring band 10. In the relaxed position shown the elastic ring rests against a circlip 9. When the electromagnet is activated the ring is moved axially away from the circlip to expand into gripping engagement with the tube A. In another embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown) the drive plate 14 is moved axially by Belleville washers (22) to expand the elastic ring (16) into gripping engagement; for disengagement, the plate is drawn axially against the pressure of the washers by means of an electromagnet (20) in a fixed part (13). If desired, the conical surfaces may be reversed so that actuation of the electromagnet will disengage (in Fig. 1) and engage (in Fig. 5).
