Abstract

1482006 Mixing apparatus ACME-CLEVELAND CORP 14 Oct 1974 [19 Nov 1973] 44510/74 Heading B1C In apparatus for mixing foundry sand with a liquid binder, the binder constituents are supplied by pipes 51, 52 to the interior of a rotor 15 whence they are projected centrifugally through vertical slots 60 in the rotor walls and strike a falling curtain of sand. The latter is controlled by a gate 29 and is directed by guide surfaces through a central opening in a member 33 to a dished member 17; the members 17, 33 form an assembly rotating coaxially with but independently of the rotor 15. The sand is upwardly directed by the dished member 17 to strike the lip 44 of member 33, by which is it redirected downwardly and falls along the inner surface of the housing 54A, 54B. The path of the sand thus passes three times through the zone of projection of the liquid binder, at 71A, 71B and 71C. The dished member 17 carries a fan blade 157 to prevent material adhering to the inner surface of the housing. Air or other gas may also be supplied through a hollow support 56A and passages 118 to fan blades 109 mounted on the member 17, and through apertures 119, 126 to the interior of the rotor 15. The housing 54A, 54B is hinged at 70 to permit replacement of a liner 94, and the members 17, 33 may also have liners. A modified rotor, Fig. 3, enables two binder components to be dispensed in parallel planes. The rotor is driven at 5000 to 15000 rev/min or at a peripheral speed of 3000 to 16000 ft/sec.
