Abstract

1481606 Ropes; braided fabrics ALLIED POLYMER GROUP Ltd 23 Sept 1975 [24 Sept 1974 14 March 1975] 41441/74 and 10666/ 75 Headings D1K and DIT A rope having at least one element of elastic material is characterised in that it is associated with strips, filaments or cords having a resilience that is low compared with that of the elastic material; the strips, filaments or cords causing the elastic material to be subjected to pressure when the rope is elongated or at least when the elongation exceeds a predetermined value and the volume and density of the element is such that the rope is buoyant in water. In Fig. 1 a thick walled tube 1 of rubber or the like has flanges 2 and 3 attached to its ends. Also attached to the flanges 2 and 3 is a sheath of braiding, one wire of which is schematically indicated at 4. The angle made by the wire 4 with the axis of the cylinder is marked X. If the angle X is less than 45 degrees, the radius of the helix will decrease more rapidly than the radius of the rubber, and the braiding will then tighten on the rubber. If in an untensioned rope the angle X is 60‹ then stretching of the rope will initially be resisted only by the rubber, with the braiding moving out of contact with the rubber. When stretching has reduced the angle X to 30 degrees the braiding will again be in contact with the rubber; and further stretching will cause the braiding to tighten against the rubber. Radial pressure of the braiding against the rubber increases the resistance to stretching of the rope. In a modified embodiment a sheath of braiding contains a line of rubber balls or bodies of non-cylindrical shape. In the condition of rest the braiding just touches the balls; when stretched the braiding contracts radially to compress the balls. In a further modification the rope comprises an elastomeric core that is reinforced by longitudinally extending support yarns. Extending helically around the core are nylon strands which, when the rope is stretched, exert a radial compression on the core. The rope may be in the form of a plaited or knitted web.
