Abstract

1481564 Electro-depositing Ni-Fe alloy OXY METAL INDUSTRIES CORP 17 July 1974 [1 April 1974] 31732/74 Heading C7B Bright Ni-Fe alloy, suitable for receiving a subsequent Cr electro-plate, is deposited from an aqueous acidic bath comprising Ni and Fe ions (Fe<SP>2+</SP> with or without Fe<SP>3+</SP>) together with a primary Ni brightener, a metal complexing agent, a reaction product of a polyamine with an alkylating or sulphonating agent and optionally an acetylenic secondary Ni brightener. The primary brightener may be a sulpho-oxygen compound such as saccharine, naphthalene trisulphonic acid, sulphobenzaldehyde, dibenzenesulphonamide, Na alkyl sulphonate, a benzene sulphinate, vinyl sulphonate, #-styrene sulphonate or a cyano C 1-4 - alkyl sulphonate. The complexing agent may be a hydroxy or'amino carboxylic acid e.g. citric, tartaric or gluconic (others listed). The polyamine may be polyethyleneimine of M.W. 300-24000 reacted with e.g. propane sultone, sulphamic acid or propargyl epichlorhydrin (other reagents listed). Many listed acetylenic compounds include 2-propynoxy ethanol, 2-hydroxy-3-propynoxy-1-propane sulphonate, 1-propynoxy-3-chloro-2-propanol and 1-propynoxy-2-propanol. Conventional Fe and Ni sources are used. A pH buffer e.g. B(OH)3 or Na acetate may be added to pH 2À5-5À5. Metallic or plastics substrates may be plated, the latter after being rendered conductive with Ni or Cu.
