Abstract
1481056 Cellulosic smoking compositions; thermally degraded cellulose SUTTON RESEARCH CORP 30 Sept 1974 42367/74 Heading C3A [Also in Division A2] 3-15% of an alkaline earth metal salt of an organic carboxylic or hydroxy acid, e.g. calcium oxalate is combined with a cellulosic material, which is exposed in a non-combustible atmosphere to a temperature of 275-750‹ C. for a time sufficient to effect a weight loss of at least 60% but not more than 75% of the cellulosic material, and then processed to form a smokable material. Cellulosic material embraces α-cellulose, wood or paper pulp, straw, flax, bamboo, cotton, hemp, rice fibres and other carbohydrate fibrous materials. The product may be modified by addition of humectants, smoke generating materials, ashing components, colouring agents, fillers and other additives for improving taste, aroma, strength and storability. The pH of the smokable material may be adjusted to at least 7 by additions of organic amine, ammonium salt or urea.
