Abstract

1480507 Bearings FEDERAL-MOGUL WESTWIND AIR BEARING Ltd 27 Aug 1975 [4 Sept 1974] 38642/74 Heading F2A [Also in Division H2] In a bearing assembly in which a movable member 1 is mounted on a fluid bearing 14 permitting axial and rotary movement of member 1 relative to a stator 6, ducts 17, 18, are formed in the movable member for conveying fluid to the cylindrical bearing surfaces. The assembly shown has two air bearings 13, 14 disposed on opposite sides of a squirrel cage induction motor for rotating the shaft 1, the squirrel cage being formed directly on the shaft, as disclosed in Specification 1,427,818. Axial reciprocating movement is transmitted to the rotor from input member 26 through non- rotating but axially movable members 33, 34 which, together with a flange 31 on the shaft 1, form a fluid thrust bearing for the shaft. The assembly is suitable for use in machine tools.
