Abstract

1480236 Infra-red source HEWLETTPACKARD CO 5 Sept 1974 [9 Oct 1973] 38849/74 Heading H5H An infra-red radiation source comprises a resistive film 13 of emissivity greater than 0À5 between a pair of electrodes 15 of emissivity less than 0À2 on a substrate 11, and leads 19 connected to the electrodes. Film 13 is made of Cr 3 Si and the substrate 11 is made from sapphire, Y 2 O 3 or quartz. Platinum or gold which have relatively low emissivities are used for electrodes 15 which have small regions 17 overlying the resistive film 13. Leads 19 are of gold. A metal layer 21 presents emission of spurious radiation from the underside of the source. The resistive film 13 may be covered by an antireflecting layer of TiO 2 to increase the effective emissivity of the source. The refractive index of the antireflecting layer is approximately equal to the square root of the refractive index of the film 13. In Fig. 3 (not shown) the infra-red source is mounted in a housing with its emissive film surface 13 facing towards an elliptical or parabolic mirror formed by an aluminium block. Metal terminal posts extend through the aluminium block and are connected to the leads 19 of the source. The mirror reflects radiation from the source to produce a magnified image. Inert gas, e.g. nitrogen preferably fills the housing.
