Abstract
148,006. Wightwick, G. May 3, 1919. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Lighting systems; systems of charging galvanic batteries.-An electro-magnetic switch particularly for use in connecting a generator to a battery on a petrol-electric vehicle consists of a pair of movable cores 10, 11 placed opposite to fixed permanent or electro-magnets 25, 26, the cores being magnetized to produce polarities as shown, so that one core will move in one direction and the other in the opposite. The magnetization of the cores depends on the position of the motor field controller 24; when the vehicle is going up hill, no resistances are used with the field 23, but when the vehicle is on a level or going downhill, some of the diverter resistances are placed in shunt to the field. The circuit to the coils 18, 19 for the cores 10, 11 is then completed, and the dynamo connected to the terminals A is connected to the batery. When the magnets 25, 26 have to be energized by coils, a relay switch 28 consisting a movable spring cores 33, 34 closes the circuit through the coils, when the controller 24 includes some of the field resistances. On a reversal of rotation of the generator, the reversed current in the field 23 will cause the cores 10, 11 to be magnetized oppositely to the polarity shown, and the direction of current to the battery from the generator is maintained constant.
