Abstract

1480060 Removing lead from hydrocarbons EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 11 Sept 1974 [10 Oct 1973 8 April 1974] 39631/74 Heading C5E Dissolved organo-lead is removed from liquid hydrocarbon by contacting with an activated carbon having a crystallinity as determined by X-ray diffraction of not more than 20%, or not containing more than 20 wt. per cent of carbon having a graphite structure, impregnated with a cupric chloride or hydrous ferric chloride. The activated carbon suitably comprises 3-25 wt. per cent oxygen and has a pore volume of 0À5-1À5 ml./g. and a surface area of 200-1500 m.<SP>2</SP>/g. The impregnated carbon suitably comprises 50-93 wt. per cent activated carbon, 2-30 wt. per cent water and either 5-20 wt. per cent CuCl 2 and 0-10 wt. per cent organic solvent or 5-20 wt. per cent FeCl 3 . Organolead-containing gasoline can be treated at 30-120‹ F. using a fixed bed of the impregnated carbon; the gasoline can be pretreated by contacting with ferric chloride, stannic chloride, copper chloride or silicon tetrachloride.
