Abstract

1479685 Testing pressure in fire extinguishers; leak testing NU-SWIFT INTERNATIONAL Ltd. 19 July 1974 32209/74 Headings G1L and G1S To check the gas-pressure in a maintained pressure type fire extinguisher 10 in case of leakage, the interior of the extinguisher is communicated e.g. by means of a 3-way adapter 40, Fig. 1, with a source of gas 42 at a pressure known to be higher than that in the extinguisher, and with a pressure gauge 44, the combined pressure of the gases being measured by the gauge. As shown the adapter 40 is fitted on to the filling valve of the extinguisher and a valve 76 is opened so that the adapter is filled with high-pressure gas from source 42. The valve 76 is then shut. By turning a handle 64, a spindle 60 in the adapter can then be rotated to unscrew and lift the sealing plug 22 of the filling valve thereby allowing communication between the interiors of the extinguisher and the adapter 40 via grooves 31, the resultant pressure of the mixed gases, which is only marginally altered by the small volume of gas from source 42 added to the gas in the extinguisher, being measured by gauge 44. The use of a high-pressure source 42 precludes leakage of gas from the extinguisher. A bleed valve 80 may be fitted to the adapter.
