Abstract

1479670 D C discharge method for testing contact material ALLIS-CHALMERS CORP 22 Oct 1974 [23 Oct 1973] 45625/74 Heading G1B [Also in Division H1] The gas content of material to be used for electrical contacts in a vacuum circuit interrupter is determined by a method comprising mounting the material at 66A-66G in a vacuum chamber 11, 21, 22, evacuating the gas from the chamber using for example a rough vacuum system via 31, 36 and an ion sublimation pump 37, connecting the material into an electrical D.C. circuit in series with an electrode 101 or 102 which is connected to the positive polarity of the circuit to function as an anode, the material serving as the cathode, separating the electrode and the material as by withdrawing the electrode, to draw an arc between the electrode and the material for a predetermined time, interrupting the circuit to extinguish the arc and determining the pressure and composition of the gas evolved. In the embodiment shown the vacuum chamber is connected to ion gauge 48 for pressure measurement and to mass spectrometer 38 for determination of the composition of the gas evolved. The samples of material are held on electrically conductive standard 65 on turntable 64 which is rotatable via gears 68, 69 and shaft 72 to bring the samples successively into alignment with one or other electrode 101, 102 and retractable from the position shown by means of draw-rod 82 to bring the turntable into sealing engagement with the end plate 22. Before carrying out the tests the apparatus is baked out using heater 62 while the chamber is evacuated.
