Subaqueous audible signals.-Between the receiver, such as a diaphragm 1, Fig. 1, and the electro-magnetic or other detector 4, 5, an oscillatory amplifying member 3 is interposed. This may be a lever, rigid with reference to the frequency of the sound waves, and reduced in crosssection at a bending-point instead of being pivoted. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, the amplifying-element consists of a spring bow 12, which is actuated through struts 11 by diaphragms 10 and operates on a microphone 14 mounted between its free extremities. The bend of the bow 12 is reduced in cross-section. The mass and elastic force of the amplifying-member should be small compared with those of the diaphragm. The amplifying-member or the diaphragm or both may be tuned to the frequency of the sound waves. More than one amplifying-member may be used, and the detecting-devices may be of a mechanical or optical kind. Reference is made to attempts to use amplifying systems consisting of stretched threads.
