Abstract

1478919 Electric connections HOECHST AG 18 Dec 1974 [18 Dec 1973] 54748/74 Heading H2E [Also in Divisions B3 and H5] To prevent deformation and changes in physical properties of an open mesh resistive fabric when a metal strip contact applied to one face is bonded through the mesh spaces to a second strip on the opposite face by pressing the contact strip by means of a pressure element, e.g. a punch or roller, against the second strip which is placed on a counter-element on the side of the fabric opposite to the metal strip contact, the pressing surface at least of the pressure element is elastomeric material whose Shore hardness A is from 25-80 and whose impact resistance is from 10 to 70%. The pressure element causes the contact strip to conform to any irregularities in the surface of the resistive fabric to ensure good electrical contact. The fabric material may be made of plastics, e.g. P.T.F.E., polyesters, expoxy resins, polyvinyl acetate, silicone rubber, or other non-conductors, e.g. rubber loaded with conductive particle, e.g. carbon black, graphite, copper, bronze, silver or aluminium and preferably reinforced with glass fibres or a coarse meshed fabric of natural or synthetic fibres. In addition the fabric material may be made of compressed carbon or graphite fibres. The contact strips may be applied to the same or opposite surfaces of the resistive fabric. The metal contact strips may be made of copper, silver, gold, aluminium or platinum group metals. The process is especially suitable for applying copper ribbon contact strips 2 to the delicate open mesh resistive heating fabric 1 shown. The fabric 1 is made of woven glass fibre impregnated with a mixture of carbon black graphite and a P.T.F.E. binder. Plastics or copper strips 4 having an adhesive layer conductively loaded with copper particles are applied to the fabric 1 on the side opposite to the contact strips 2 so that when the elastomeric pressing element is applied the contact strips 2 are deformed around the filaments of the fabric 1 without distorting them into adhesive contact with the copper strips 4. Instead of an adhesive layer loaded with conductive particles the copper backing strips 4 may have a solder layer which is caused to unite the strips 4 and 2 when melted by a heated counterpressure plate.
