Abstract

147,860. Emerson, V. L. Feb. 10, 1916, [Convention date]. Joints; componnd forms.-Universal joints are made by joining a hard finished part and a soft workable part by welding in which the heat is localized. A drawn sheet-steel shell X is roughly ground, heat-treated, hardened, and ground accurately at 4, 5, 6, and 7. It is then mounted in a face-plate 20 having a shank 21 and hand nut 24 for securing a hub Y, made from bar stock, in contact therewith for welding at 28<1> by a soft iron electrode 25 preferably connected to the positive end of a circuit, the negative end being connected to a brush 27. The end of the hub is preferably shouldered down to enter the end cf the shell, and flat and concave bevels 11, 17 may be formed on the parts to facilitate welding. The hub, being soft, can be key-slotted &c. as and when required for securing to its shaft C, Fig. 6, and the shell X is adapted to engage rollers or balls J on a voke F mounted on a shaft G. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the application of the method to articles other than universal joints; this subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
