Abstract
1478483 Petroleum sulphonates MARATHON OIL CO 14 Aug 1974 [23 Aug 1973] 35784/74 Heading C2C [Also in Division E1] Monovalent cation-containing petroleum sulphonates are obtained by (i) reacting under conditions of turbulent flow in a tubular reactor (a) a hydrocarbon gas oil feedstock having an average molecular weight in the range 250-700, an aliphatic to aromatic proton ratio in the range 5 : 1 to 50 : 1, and containing at least 20% by weight of molecules containing an aromatic nucleus, which aromatic nucleus-containing molecules have an aliphatic to aromatic proton ratio in the range 3 :1 to 20 : 1, and (b) a solution of from 0À1 to 0À3 parts by weight of SO 3 in 1 part by weight ethylene dichloride (EDC), said solution being reacted with said feedstock in an amount sufficient to provide a weight ratio of SO 3 to gas oil feedstock in the range 0À05 : 1 to 0À3 : 1; (ii) withdrawing the reaction mixture from the reactor through a heat exchanger effective to adjust the temperature of the reaction mixture to a value not greater than 250‹ F.; (iii) separating the reaction mixture downstream from the heat exchanger into a product stream and a recycle stream in the proportion of at least 1 part recycle stream to 1 part product stream; (iv) recycling the recycle stream to the tubular reactor; (v) introducing said feedstock into said recycle stream upstream of the reactor to provide a mixed recycle/feedstock stream flowing through said reactor; (vi) introducing said SO 3 / EDC solution into said mixed recycle/feedstock stream in said reactor as an SO 3 /EDC solution stream, the velocity ratio of said mixed recycle/ feedstock stream to said SO 3 /EDC stream in said reactor being at least 4 : 1; (vii) reacting said product stream separated in (iii) with a basic aqueous solution containing a monovalent cation to provide a neutralized product stream; (viii) stripping EDC from the neutralized product stream; (ix) extracting the product stream from (viii) with water; and (x) recovering the product petroleum sulphonate as a lower layer from said extraction step (ix). The gas oil plus recycled reaction products stream and the SO 3 /EDC stream are preferably impinged substantially at right angles, and the nozzle through which the SO 3 /EDC stream is introduced to the gas oil plus recycled products stream is preferably shaped to form a shield to prevent the gas oil and recycled products from entering the nozzle. Apparatus is described for carrying out the process.
