Abstract

1477519 Sulphide linked anhydrides and imides GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 2 July 1974 29332/74 Heading C2C [Also in Divisions C3 and C5] Novel anhydrides of formula are prepared by reacting where R is C 1-8 alkyl or a C 6-20 aromatic radical and X is F, Cl, Br, I or NO 2 with an alkali metal sulphide to give novel imides of formula hydrolysing this with a base to give the correspending thiobis(phthalaic acid salt) acidifying to recover the thiobis(phthalic acid) and dehydrating this to give the anhydride. Bis(2,3-dicarboxyphenyl)sulphide and bis-(3,4 dicarboxyphenyl)sulphide are isolated intermediates. The novel anhydrides are used as antioxidants in polymers and hydrocarbon oils and as curing agents for epoxy resins and the novel imides as plasticizers, fire retardants and antioxidants for polymers and aromatic hydrocarbon greases.
