Abstract

Penicillins of the general formula: <FORM:0961627/C1/1> and non-toxic salts thereof, where R is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, aralkyl or aryl group, X is CH or N, and Z is a divalent radical containing one or two carbon atoms, such as -CH=CH-, -CH2-, -(CH2)2- or -CO-, are prepared by a process wherein 6-aminopenicillanic acid is reacted with an acid chloride, bromide, anhydride or mixed anhydride derived from a carboxylic acid of the general formula: <FORM:0961627/C1/2> Examples describe the production of the sodium salts of 9-oxo-4-fluorenyl-, 4-fluorenyl-, 1-aza-2-phenyl-4-phenanthryl- and 4-phenanthryl-penicillins.
