Abstract
1477485 Grinding B O C INTERNATIONAL Lid 26 July 1974 [26 April 1973] 23370/74 Heading B3D Metal removal apparatus for gouging a groove in the bottom of a channel between two abutting metal parts welded together and into the back of the weld metal includes a motor driven grinding wheel 20 which is biased towards the weld and which is mounted so that it can move laterally against an axial centralizing bias, in a direction parallel to its rotational axis by contact with the walls of the channel. The grinding wheel is effective to gouge out a groove of substantially uniform cross-section as apparatus and weld are moved relatively. In the apparatus shown in figures 7 and 8, wheel 20 is rotatably mounted on a sub-assembly 40 which also supports motor 42 for driving the wheel through V-belt drive 21. The sub-assembly is mounted on a slidable carriage 38 biased centrally by compression springs not shown. The carriage is carried by an arm 36 pivoted on a support shaft 34 on an arcuate supporting arm 32 which is pivotable at 30 to a bracket 28 between two limit positions disposed orthogonally relative to one another and the arm 32 is lockable in either position. Shaft 34 also supports a lever 46 with a riding roller 44 at one end and adjustment screw 54 engaged between the other end 48 and extension 50 of arm 36 for adjusting the depth of grinding. The subassembly 40 and wheel 20 are biased in use by gravity to pivot around shaft 34 on arm 36 and this is limited by adjustable screw 60 and stop 66 on lever 46 and arcuate arm 32 respectively shield casing 68 for the wheel carrier means 70, e.g. including industrial diamond tools, for dressing the wheel edge. Bracket 28 is mounted on the end of a boom 26 movable horizontally by rack 82 and means inside a slide 72 which is movable vertically by chain and sprocket drive 80, 78 on a column 74. A platform, not shown, may be provided for the operator on one side of the boom. The apparatus may grind longitudinal welds on a cylinder 16 in the position shown in Fig. 7. Alternatively cylinder 16 may be rotated on rollers 88, the apparatus moved to its other limit position about pivot 30 and held stationary in order to grind circumferential welds.
