Abstract

1477456 Piezoelectric actuators C A V Ltd 8 July 1974 [12 July 1973] 33337/73 Heading H2A [Also in Divisions F1 and F2] In a fluid pressure generating arrangement wherein a stack of piezoelectric crystals 34 is mechanically coupled to a piston (33, Fig. 1, not shown) for driving the piston within a cylinder, the crystals 40 of the stack are electrically connected to form at least two groups which can be separately connected to a source to produce different movements of the piston, thereby to obtain different fluid pressures within the cylinder, e.g. for operating two valves (23, 24) at their different respective operating pressures. In the arrangement shown, alternate electrodes 41 between the crystals 40 in the stack are connected together for connection to a terminal 42 of a source, and the remaining alternate electrodes 41 are connected together in groups for connection to a terminal 43 of the source by way of a pair of switches 44. By closing one switch 44, the stack 34 can be partially energized to produce a first fluid pressure, and by closing both switches the stack can be fully energized to produce a second fluid pressure. The arrangement is employed in a fuel injection system (see Division F1)
