Abstract
1476943 Magnetic heads SIEMENS AG 28 Aug 1974 [4 Sept 1973] 37529/74 Heading G5R In the manufacture of a magnetic read or write head for use with magnetic tape and which has a transducing gap between two polepieces, a coating of non-magnetic ceramic material 9 is deposited on the working surface of the head and thereafter this coating is removed from the transducing gap and from zones of the working surface immediately adjoining the gap and located one in front and one behind the gap as seen in the direction of tape movement in use of the head, a thin layer of a metal which acts to promote adhesion between the working surface and said coating being applied, prior to said deposition, at least to those areas of the working surface which are still covered by said coating at the end of the removal step. The working face of the head is formed with a recess on either side of the gap prior to the application of the metal layer, whereby in the finished head the ceramic material 9 only fills said recesses. The metal layer may be 0.05 mm. thick and of tungsten and the ceramic coating may be a mixture of abour 60% by weight aluminum oxide and 40% titanium. Both layers may be applied by plasma spraying and the pores and gaps of the ceramic material may be filled by impregnation with a homogeneous material such as an epoxy or polyacrylodiester resin. The head may be a multitrack head in which the pole-pieces and gap-forming non-magnetic foils are located in the screwed-together halves of a brass housing.
