Abstract

1476426 Medicinal and technical white oils SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 1 July 1974 [3 July 1973] 31603/73 Heading C5E White oils are produced from wax containing less than 30% by weight of aromatics by hydrogen treatment using a sulphidic catalyst comprising Ni and/or Co together with Mo and/or W on a carrier, the process being carried out such that (a) if the aromatics content of the wax is at most 2 % or at most 5 %, medicinal and technical white oils respectively are produced by the catalytic hydrogen treatment optionally followed by treatment with a solid adsorbent and (b) if the aromatics content is more than 2% but not more than 5 % or more than 5 % respectively, medicinal and tehnical white oils respectively are prepared by the catalytic hydrogen treatment followed by after-treatment with acid, neutralization and then treatment with a solid adsorbent. The wax feed can be obtained during the preparation of lubricating oils by processes involving either treatment with acid or hydrocracking and can be deoiled. The hydrotreated product can be dewaxed using a methyl ethyl ketone-toluene mixture and the wax recycled to the hydrogenation process. In examples a sulphided nickel-tungsten-fluorinealumina catalyst is used in the hydrotreating of a deoiled wax obtained by dewaxing a residual lubricating oil fraction which had been deasphalted with propane and extracted with furfural and a sulphided nickel - molybdenum - phosphorus - fluorine - alumina catalyst is used in the hydrotreating of a wax obtained by dewaxing a hydrocrackate of a propane-deasphalted residual lubricating oil. The hydrogenation can be carried out at 300-425‹ C. and a hydrogen partial pressure of 10-250 bar.
