1476343 Polyester laminates TEIJIN Ltd 13 June 1974 [14 June 1973 25 June 1973 16 Nov 1973 18 March 1974 23 March 1974] 26307/74 Headings B5N and B5B [Also in Division G2] A film obtained by heat-setting a laminated stretch-oriented polyester film comprises a first crystalline aromatic polyester layer (A) providing one surface of the laminate, a second crystalline aromatic polyester layer (B) providing the other surface of the laminate and optionally a third crystalline aromatic polyester layer (C) interposed between layers (A) and (B) in which laminate, the polyester constituting layer (A) has an intrinsic viscosity measured in o-chlorophenol solution of the polyester at 35‹ C. and expressed on 100 c.c./g. of 0À35 to 1À0 and the polyester consitituting layer (B) has an intrinsic viscosity which has a value of 0À37 to 1À0 and is 0À02 to 0À5 greater than that of the polyester constituting layer (A). The product, which may be used in packaging, for moulding or for electrical insulation and which may be used in the manufacture of decorative films, measuring tapes, adhesive tapes and photographic films may be made by co-extrusion, uniaxial or biaxial orienting and heat setting. Specified polyesters are polyethylene-2,6-naphthalate, polytetramethylene terephthalate, polyethylene terephthalate, polytetramethylene-2,6- naphthalate or carbonates and copolyesters thereof, the polyester being optionally used as a polymer blend comprising also polycaprolactam, polyhexamethylene adipamide, polyethylene, polypropylene, poly-butene-1 or polystyrene. A filler, e.g. MgO, ZnO, MgCO 3 , CaCO 3 , BaSO 4 , Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 , TiO 2 , Ca, Ba, Zn or Mn terephthalate, carbon black or a pigment may be incorporated in one or both of polyester films (A) and (B). A coloured film may be produced by incorporating a pigment in layer (C). The product may be metallized. Filaments may be made by splitting an oriented film optionally metallized prior to the step of heat setting, specified methods of splitting being by twisting or friction on a yarn winder, a yarn plier or a carding machine, by beating the oriented film with a hammer, by swelling the film with a solvent or by using a microslitter. The filaments may be used in the manufacture of ropes, fishing nets, bags, cloths, cords, netting, filter cloths, covers, salts, sewing threads, belts, carpet piles, mats, wall coverings, curtains, cushions, bed sheets, table cloths or non-woven fabrics.
