Abstract

1476187 Rack railways KRAMPE & CO FERTIGUNG IN BERGBAUBEDARF GmbH 13 Sept 1974 [20 Oct 1973] 39923/74 Heading B7H [Also in Divisions E1-E2] A rack railway comprises two parallel steel rails installed on sleepers with a continuous rack therebetween and a traction engine powering hydraulic drive motors housed in two bogies supporting the traction engine, each bogie being supported by track wheels and having a drive pinion driven by the associated hydraulic drive motor for engagement with the rack. The rack teeth possess straight upper faces inclined at 16 degrees to the normal to the line of the rack and lower flanks designed to conform to the involute toothing of the drive pinion. The traction engine consists of a diesel motor 20 supported by bogie units 18, and a driver's cab 21 at each end running on separate bogies 24, each cab including coupling means 26 for attachment to further trucks to form a train. The bogie units 18 carry slow-running radial-piston hydraulic motors 15 driving the pinions 16 through elastic buffers. The hydraulic motors are supplied by an axial piston pump coupled to the diesel motor, the quantity of fluid delivered by the pump being controlled by a servomotor. A switch-over valve for connecting one or both hydraulic motors to the pump, and a pneumatically operated reversing valve for controlling the direction of rotation of the hydraulic motors, are controlled from either driver's cab.
