Abstract

1476100 Dental Amalgam FEDERALMOGUL CORP 18 March 1975 [18 March 1974] 11238/75 Heading C7A A silver alloy powder comprising Ag 47À4%-69À8%, balance Sn 20-31À9% Cu 7À6-26À3 with optionally up to 2% Zn and with ratios, Ag to Sn = 1.8 to 3:1 and Sn to Cu = 1 to 3:1 is mixed with 42-54% mercury to produce a corrosion and discoluration resistant, dental amalgam with improved mechancial properties The powder is made by micro casting a homogenous alloy into small particles, average size less than in 100 microns (preferably 5-44 microns) by airless spraying or centrifugal fragmentation or preferably by atomizing and cooling preferably with and in an inert gas i.e. argon, so that, while each particle is of the same composition, there is a compositional gradient from edge to centre of the spherical particles, the outer surface being richer in Ag and Cu, with the tin-rich phase concentrated at the particle core. When triturated with mercury, the powder forms a continuous matrix with discrete unreacted particle cores, thus providing an amalgam with unproved properties.
