1475621 Binding mechanisms for balers DEERE & CO 10 July 1975 [17 July 1974 (2)] 29018/75 Heading AIF A baler forms cylindrical crop bales rotating about a horizontal axis and comprises a binding mechanism with a tubular arm 84 through which twine 97 passes, an inclined or vertical rock shaft 86 connected to one end of the arm causing the other end of the arm to swing arcuately thereby moving along the length of the rotating bale so that twine is drawn spirally round the bale. A piston and cylinder 90 controls the rock shaft movement and the hydraulic circuit of the cylinder includes at least one variable orifice to adjust the rate of movement. A cutter, in housing 103 mounted on a compressor 72 of the baler, comprises a knife 118 on pivot 120 and biased by a spring 124 against an adjustable stop 122, and an anvil 110 on one end of a pivoted bell crank lever 105 pivotally connected by a link 108 to a lever on pivot 102. A spring 114 biases the cutter into the Fig. 5 position, but when arm 84 moves into a transverse position it engages lever 101 and causes anvil 110 to move against knife 118 to sever twine 97 (Fig. 4). The twine is clamped between the knife and anvil until the piston of cylinder 90 is extended to commence the swinging of arm 84 along the bale. In the fore and aft position of arm 84 (dashed lines of Fig. 5), the dangling end of twine 97 is readily picked up by the compressor rolls 26, 28 of the baler to commence the binding operation.
