Abstract

1475538 Locating pipe line pigs TRANSCANADA PIPELINES Ltd 27 Aug 1974 [19 Sept 1973] 37393/74 Heading G1N A coil 13 is arranged outside a pipeline 11 so that its magnetic axis is approximately at right angles to that of the pipeline and is energized by A.C. from a source 15. The resulting magnetic field generated by eddy currents set up in the electrically conductive pipeline is detected by a coil 16 mounted on a pig 17 carrying a tape recorder 23, there being a "null" position when coil 16 is centred beneath coil 13 with a phase reversal on either side. A Hall effect device may replace coil 16. The coil 13 may be saddle-shaped to fit directly on the pipe. The arrangement may be used to control some function of the pig e.g. pipeline blocking at a selected location.
