Abstract
1475518 Treating IC engine charges ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 28 June 1974 [29 June 1973 3 Oct 1973] 28714/74 Heading F1B An I.C. engine having a system for reducing the pollutants in the exhaust gases, the system comprising a device for measuring the quantity of air inducted, a device for metering an amount of fuel to provide a rich mixture, a source for feeding additional air to an induction manifold downstream of the air measuring device and an oxygen measuring sensor connected in an exhaust manifold of the engine and operable to control the amount of additional air supplied to the engine in dependence on the oxygen content of the exhaust gases to provide a desired fuel-air ratio. Air is drawn into an I.C. engine 1 through a filter 2 and fuel is added in a carburetter 4 to produce a richer-thanstoichiometric mixture, the amount of fuel being metered in accordance with the quantity of air which is determined by an air-measuring device not shown. Downstream of the air measuring device, additional air is admitted through pipe 9, to adjust the air/fuel ratio to stoichiometric, the amount of additional air being controlled in accordance with the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gases, which is determined by an oxygen sensor 7, in the exhaust manifold 3. Air is supplied by an engine driven pump 6, through a solenoid valve 10 which is actuated by the signal received from amplifier 8 to which sensor 7 is connected. The pressure of the additional air is controlled by a diaphragm valve 11 in which one side of the diaphragm is subject to inlet manifold depression via a pipe 15, and the other side to pump pressure. An outlet 14 to atmosphere is provided and the diaphragm is biased to close the outlet by spring 13. In a first modification, Fig. 2, the valve comprises three diaphragms 12, 22 and 20, and pipe 15 has a branch 19 which is connected to the chamber 18 on one side of the larger diaphragm 20. Atmospheric pressure is admitted to the chamber on the other side of diaphragm 20, and the space between diaphragms 12 and 22 is connected to the inlet manifold.
