Abstract

1475316 Porous PTFE film SUMITOMO ELECTRIC INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 March 1974 [19 March 1973 (3)] 12189/74 Heading B5B [Also in Divisions C3 and C7] A porous sheet of polytetrafluoroethylene is made by extruding and/or rolling an unsintered polytetrafluoroethylene mixture containing a liquid lubricant at below 327‹ C. to form a sheet, stretching the extruded and/or rolled sheet at least uniaxially at below 327‹ C., the stretching being carried out at a absolute speed of 1 cm./min.-20 m./min and to produce a stretching ratio of 1 : 1À1 to 1 : 10 and then heating the stretched sheet to a temperature of at least 327‹ C. by urging the stretched sheet against a moving endless mirror-surface belt positioned over a heating roll and a cooling roll at a position adjacent one side of the cooling roll and peeling off the sheet from the endless belt on the opposite side of the cooling roll thereby continuously sintering the sheet. In the examples a mixture of polytetrafluoroethylene powder and a petroleum fraction of boiling point 150-250‹ C. is mixed, extruded into a strip which is rolled in two directions at right angles to form a sheet which is treated with trichloroethylene to remove the petroleum, dried and then stretched and finally sintered. The sintering may be carried out by passing the sheet, S, overheating roll 1 and cooling roll 2 via an endless belt 3 which has a polished mirror-surface, auxiliary rolls 5 and 6 (i) urging S against belt 3 and (ii) peeling off S respectively. The porous sheet may be used as a membrane filter, electrolytic diaphragm or diaphragm for fuel cells.
