Abstract

1324874 Drawing films and filaments; laminating UNION CARBIDE CORP 7 Oct 1970 [9 Oct 1969] 47737/70 Headings B5B and B5N [Also in Divisions B8 and F2] Continuous lengths of material 30 of variable thickness are forwarded by passage between the nip of a pair of counter-rotating, fluid-inflated mating rolls 10, 12 of a resilient material (e.g. rubber, impregnated cloth or plastics material) driven by back-up rolls 22, 24 at substantially equal surface speeds. The inflating fluid may be gaseous or liquid and is introduced, suitably at substantially equal internal pressures, through inlets 18 and 20. Where a liquid is used it may be recirculated to provide roll cooling or heating. The apparatus may be used for drawing strands, films or netting of plastics material or to provide the pressure necessary to join lengths of material together in lamination. An example relates to the drawing of strands of polystyrene.
