Abstract

1474941 Reciprocating pumps L G ERICKSON 1 May 1974 19186/74 Heading F1A [Also in Divisions A 1 A5 B2 and F2] Water projection apparatus, suitable for use in mining, fire-fighting, or irrigation, comprises a tubular body 5, Fig. 1, having an annular slot 14 in the side thereof, an outlet orifice 11 of circular cross-section at one end thereof and means 1-3 for supplying water under pressure at the other, an elongated member 7 of circular cross-section located adjacent the orifice and adjustable in position with respect thereto, and means 17 in communication with the slot 14 for injecting a friction-reducing agent such as polyethylene oxide into the body, whereby the range of the jet discharged from the apparatus is increased. The member 7 is mounted at one end of a flexible shaft which is adjustable by means of a nut 3 so that the member may act as a valve. The shaft also comprises pins 10 which reduce turbulence and equalize frictional drag within the body. RECIPROCATING PUMPS. The agent is injected through the slot 14 by apparatus including a cylinder block, 18, Fig. 1, having three sections 19-21 of different diameter containing an integral free moving piston 18a having three working faces 22-24, the combined areas of faces 23 and 24 being smaller than that of face 22. Water is taken by tube 1a from supply conduit 1, said tube 1a having a flow control valve 25 and a 3-way cycling control valve 26. With valve 26 allowing discharge of water through tube 27, water flows from body 5 through slot 14 to face 24 causing the piston to be moved downwardly, a valve 28 to be closed, and agent to be sucked into section 20 via valve 31. Subsequent operation of valve 26 and upward motion of the piston displaces the agent past valve 28 to be mixed with water displaced from section 21. The flow-rate of the diluted agent through tube 17 is controlled by the valve 25 which controls the speed of the piston during the injection stroke. Direction or adjustment of the jet above a vertical axis and through a range of elevation angles. A short body or barrel 5 is provided with flow-straightening vanes 34. The weight of the apparatus is supported by bearings carried by a cage assembly 39 mounted on wheels 40 engaging a track 41. A counterweight assembly 36 provides easy balance with the barrel elevated at 30 degrees. The elevation is adjusted by a handle or assembly 36. In the modification of Fig. 4 (not shown) the member 7 is spring-loaded into the closed position within a shielded head located transversely with respect to the barrel axis. The barrel is rotated by an hydraulic motor driven by the water inlet supply and the agent supply is injected upstream of the bearing (44) of the barrel.
