Abstract

1474823 Dimming light sources ITT INDUSTRIES Inc 22 May 1975 [8 June 1974] 22126/75 Heading H2H A bipolar monolithic integrated circuit for effecting on-and-off switching of a A.C. load RL comprises a single semiconductor substrate having a control stage SS supplied by a positive voltage + U B and a switching stage consisting of two anti parallel-connected thyristors each analogous to a pair of complementary transistors Tpp, Tpn; Tnn, Tnp and two further transistors T1, T2, connected as shown, the substrate S of the integrated circuit being connected to the terminal of the thyristors remote from the load RL. As described, the invention is applicable to brightness control or a touch-operated switch with the integrated circuit located in a socket box of a mains supply system. In the ON condition, a signal to E operates the Schmitt or flip-flop SS such that transistors T1 ... T4 are off. The thyristor analagous to transistors Tpp, Tpn thus becomes conductive on positive half cycles and the other thyristor on negative half cycles of the mains supply U. The switch is turned off by transistors T1 .. T4 being turned on by the control circuit SS. A separate diode D may be included to increase the total reverse voltage. Resistors may be included between the base and emitter of T1, T2 or between the collectors of the complementary transistors. A capacitor formed by dimensioning the area and/or doping of the collector base junctions may be provided between the collectors of the complementary transistors.
