Abstract

1474091 Rock breakers CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 19 Aug 1974 [23 Aug 1973] 36454/74 Heading B4C [Also in Division E1] A rock fracturing tool comprises a housing 32, a drive shaft 48 with an eccentrically mounted member 58 thereon which is surrounded by an impact member 60 rotatably mounted thereon which as the drive shaft is rotated strikes a fracturing tool 38 through an impact receiving member 80. Rotation of the member 60 relative to member 48 is achieved as shown by gearing elements 96, 100 which cause different areas of the surface of member 60 to impact the receiving member 80. In a modification this is achieved by frictionally engaging surfaces. A flexible inflatable seal 88 is provided and is fastened to the housing at 90 and to member 80 at 92 to produce a rolling action. Flywheel members 68, 70 are keyed to shaft 48 and a damper for return motion is provided at 94. The mechanism may be rotatably mounted on the jib of a tractor mechanism.
