Abstract

[Also in Division B4] A device for transmitting rotary and/or percussive movements in a tool, such as a rock drill or hammer comprises rotary input and output members 12, 14 and 17, 20 respectively mounted in a housing 10, 11 and provided with coacting projections 16, 22 such that when, in use, the output member is moved axially, the output member is rotated together with the input member, means 23, 32, 36 being provided in order to lock the output member against rotation so that it effects percussive movements only. The input member is formed with a flange 14 having angularly-spaced holes in which steel balls 16, constituting the projections, are located, the flange being connected to a stem 12 adapted to be coupled to the prime mover, such as an electric motor, of the tool. The output member is also formed with a flange 20 having blind holes 21 for steel balls 22. A third member 26 is rotatably mounted about the stem 12 and is also provided with steel balls 29. A ring 32 is rotatable about the housing 10, 11 and arranged, depending upon its angular position, to press steel balls 35, 36 into teeth 23, 28 formed on the output member and third members in order to prevent their rotation. By suitably positioning the ring the output member may be rotated only, have percussive movements only or percussive and rotary movements.
