Abstract

1474056 Brine from alumina plant red mud UNIVERSITY OF GUYANA and G ONYEMAUWA 25 July 1974 32926/74 Heading C1A Sodium chloride in the form of brine is produced from alumina plant red mud by heating it in the presence of sufficient hydrochloric acid to produce a pH of 5À5 to 6, and then separating the solids from the liquid phase. Preferably the mud is dried at 115‹ C., formed into an aqueous slurry and treated as above at 70-80‹ C. The brine may be concentrated and electrolysed to form caustic soda. The solid residues may be mixed with kaolinitic clay, shaped and fired at 1090‹ to 1150‹ C. to form engineering bricks.
