Abstract

A liquid fuel is obtained by distilling crude petroleum by the aid of superheated steam or inert gases until a residual pitch of high melting-point, e.g. 192 DEG F., is obtained, and then mixing the pitch while still hot with an oil of low viscosity, e.g. 49 DEG Saybolt at 100 DEG F., and low cold test, e.g. pouring below 0 DEG F. The oil so used may be the " pressure tar " obtained as a residue in distilling heavy petroleum distillates (preferably freed from lubricants and waxes) under pressure for the production of gasolene, as described in Specification 29862/12, [Class 32, Distilling &c.]. The pitch and pressure tar may thus be derived from the same crude oil. The crude petroleum is continuously distilled by passage through a series of stills, the pressure tar being supplied to the last still.
