Abstract

Polyurethane foams are coloured in the course of their preparation by adding dye solutions to the foam formation reactants before or during the reaction. The addition during continuous foam formation can be by means of a metering pump. The dye solutions contain (a) one or more dyes which all have at least one amino or hydroxyl group capable of an addition reaction with isocyanates, and (b) a solvent comprising one or more of the following compounds having a boiling point above 180 DEG C: aliphatic or aromatic esters of phosphoric, phthalic or adipic acid, alcohols, ketones, lactones, ethers. The process produces a strong, chemical bond between the dyes and the foam molecules, which is not achievable with pigments. Solvents of the kind mentioned make it possible to avoid interfering with the process of foam formation and impairing the properties of the foam.
