Abstract

Steering-gear.-Relates to coupling appliances for tractors and two-wheeled trailers of the kind provided with steering adjustments for the trailer, and consists in the use of an additional coupling or corrector rod adjustably connected at one end to the tractor frame or to a part swinging with the tractor steering-wheels and connected at the other end to the steerable trailer wheels. The steering arm of the trailer-wheels (not shown), is connected by a corrector-rod 10 to an arm 6 pivoted at the end A<1> to the tractor chassis, the rod 10 being adjustably connected to the arm 6 as by a nut working on a screw 7 carried by the arm. By fixing the arm 6 relatively to the tractor a simple steering corrector is formed while a compound corrector is formed by pivoting the arm to the chassis, as shown, and connecting it by a second rod 4 to the tractor steering-wheel arm 5. The position of the rod 10 is adjusted for forward or backward driving by means of a toothed wheel 22 on the propeller shaft which drives a second wheel 21 on a shaft 19 connected by gearing 13 adapted to rotate the screw 7 and traverse the nut and rod 10. The wheels 21, 22 are engaged by movements of the change speed lever 26 through linkage 24 and a pivoted fork 25, or other suitable mechanism, forming with a screw-andnut device 27 an automatic release mechanism to disengage the wheels when the rod 10 has completed its movement. The corrector 10, Fig. 7, may be connected to a crank-arm 35 on a shaft 36, rotatable by hand wheel gearing 39 to swing the crank outwards and so vary the position of the rod. This construction can be converted into a compound corrector by mounting the crank-arm on: a swinging support connected to the tractor steering-arm.
