Abstract
1472125 Fuel injection pumps YANMAR DIESEL ENGINE CO Ltd 7 May 1974 20110/74 Heading F1A In a fuel injection pump comprising an angularly adjustable plunger 3 reciprocable in a cylinder barrel 2 to deliver fuel from a working chamber 20 past a discharge valve 4, the delivery being controlled by the relative co-operation between a by-pass orifice 9' in the cylinder and a metering slit 12 in the plunger periphery and connected to the working chamber 20 by a bore 11 extending through the plunger, the metering slit 12 is of smaller flow area than the by-pass orifice 9' and the bore 11. Because of the small area of the metering slit fuel flows past the discharge valve and out through the by-pass orifice 9' at the same time, whereby sudden rises in the delivery pressure are avoided. The by-pass orifice 9' is elliptical and the slit 12 is transverse to the plunger axis. A radial bore opening on to the periphery of the plunger adjacent one end of the slit 12 is connected to the bore 11. Fuel passing the discharge valve 4 passes through a pulsation chamber 15 having smaller diameter inlet and outlet passages 17, 16, respectively. Fuel enters the working chamber 20 through a suction port 8. In the zero delivery position of the plunger the metering slit 12 and the radial bore communicate with the orifice 9' before the suction port 8 is closed.
